Compton Marbling

Solveig Stone, my mother, has been marbling for over 40 years. She ran Compton Marbling for over 35 years, producing the paper that covers an extensive range of products. I have now taken over the production of the books, boxes and albums. I have tried to marble, but I am no good at it!

Solveig's interest in marbling began in the library of Stanford University in California. She had gone to live there as a bride with Humphrey who had been appointed art director of the University Press. A wonderful collection of Cobden Sanderson bindings inspired her. However, it was not until they returned to England that she actually began to marble. As the family increased with the birth of four daughters working from home became imperative.

Solveig also supplies hand marbled papers to bookbinders, conservationists, paper specialists and furniture restorers around the world.
